    Recreational Activities
Numerous sports and cultural activities found around the world began in Europe. Soccer, one of the world's most popular sports, began in England. Golf was created in Scotland. Europe is also the birthplace of opera and many famous classical music composers like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart. Europe also has a 2,700-year-old tradition of literature and drama.

Pennisulas and Islands        Most of Europe has an irregular coastline that is made up of peninsulas and islands. Norway, pictured here, is part of the Scandinavian Peninsula in northern Europe. Norway's coastline has many long, narrow inlets called fiords. These fiords were carved out by glaciers millions of years ago.

The Black Sea forms part of the boundary between Europe and Asia. Since trade routes connect the Black Sea to the Mediterranean Sea and the Caspian Sea, the area around Black Sea is a major shipping region. Each of the six countries that border the Black Sea has at least one port city. Pictured here is the Bosporus Strait that crosses Turkey and forms part of the waterway that links the Black Sea with the Mediterranean Sea.      Black Sea
